A power outage inside a poultry farm's own wiring system during a typhoon knocked out ventilation for 5 hours before anyone noticed, killing 46,000 chickens and causing losses of over NT$5 million. The utility confirmed the external grid was fine, the fault was inside the facility. Apollo Power uses the case to argue that the real risk for power-sensitive industries usually isn't the utility feed but the behind-the-meter wiring, and proposes a resilience setup combining AI EMS, grid-forming energy storage, and UPS.

At an evaporative-cooling poultry farm in Xiaying, Tainan, an internal wiring fault during a typhoon night caused a power trip inside the facility. Ventilation shut down immediately, but the failure went unnoticed for 5 hours. By the time it was caught, 46,000 chickens ready for shipment had suffocated in the heat, with losses estimated at over NT$5 million. Taipower inspected the site and confirmed the external grid supply was normal, the problem originated inside the farm's own electrical system.
The incident highlights a risk that's easy to overlook: the utility power never went down, but a single internal fault was enough to take out every critical load on site. Apollo Power points out that companies assessing their power risk tend to focus on the utility connection, while the actual weak point is often the behind-the-meter wiring itself.
To address this, Apollo Power lays out three measures.
The first is real-time monitoring and early warning. An AI EMS continuously tracks voltage, current, load ratio, and battery SOC across circuits, comparing usage patterns to catch early warning signs, such as load approaching breaker ratings, sudden inrush current, or three-phase imbalance, and pushes alerts to management before a trip actually happens, cutting response time from hours down to minutes.
The second is seamless switchover. The system runs on a grid-forming architecture (able to operate grid-tied or standalone) that can actively establish its own voltage and frequency. When utility power cuts out or voltage drops sharply, the UPS bridges the gap first, then the battery storage switches into grid-forming mode to take over supply, keeping ventilation, refrigeration, control systems, and production lines running. Unlike grid-following systems, which can only track the utility signal, grid-forming systems can sustain islanded operation, effectively forming a facility-level microgrid. Actual switchover speed, backup duration, and sustainable load all depend on SOC, battery capacity, and system design.
The third is dynamic load management to cut the risk of tripping in the first place. When several high-power devices start up at once and demand nears the contracted capacity limit, the AI EMS dispatches the battery storage to shave the peak, easing sudden load spikes and reducing the odds of an internal trip.
Apollo Power's system uses LFP cells, which offer solid safety and cycle life, and can be used day-to-day for peak shaving, contracted-capacity management, and demand response, so the backup investment also cuts electricity costs rather than just sitting idle. When something does go wrong, it becomes the last line of defense keeping production running.
Apollo Power currently offers a "corporate power resilience checkup" to help companies identify blind spots in their internal grid, backup coverage gaps, and single points of failure, and design a resilience architecture suited to their needs.
